2026 Sabah Project: Bringing Joy to Some of Sabah's Poor People (Part 1)

2026 Sabah Project: Bringing Joy to Some of Sabah's Poor People (Part 1)

Month of March' 26:
Distribution of rice and cooked food to those in need:
1) Individuals and families who, due to circumstances beyond their control, live in fragile, makeshift shelters along the coast of Sabah, constantly exposed to the harsh forces of nature and the elements.
2) Hungry children, as well as elderly individuals, in remote villages with limited access to basic necessities.
3)We also took the opportunity to contribute food for "buka puasa" to villagers and helpers during this fasting period.

Below are reports, photos and videos from Philip Goh and student under the CSP Education Assistance Program who assisted in part of the program.
We sincerely express our BIG THANK you to all for your donations, kind thoughts & well wishes for joining us in this project.

BRINGING JOY TO SOME OF SABAH'S POOR PEOPLE

Sampoerna, Tawau

Among the Poor Segment living in Sampoerna are the Bajau Sea People (Bajau Laut) who live on the more remote islands off Sampoerna Town, Tawau, on Stilt Houses in the Sea and in Boats.

Education .... A few of the children have the opportunity and access to education, and yet fewer still, complete secondary schooling. At the age of 3 or 4 years old, the children are already taught to swim and dive into the Sea. These people have evolved and adpated to live in the sea so that many are said to be able to dive in the waters up to 13 minutes, without using oxygen tanks.

Economically, they fish, harvest seaweed, sea cucumbers and other sea products, selling them to "middle men" often at low prices. When the seas are rough, and with changes to weather conditions, their livelihoods are affected. There are often times when the children have to go hungry when there is no food. Their stilt houses in the sea are under the risks of demolition; especially those which are nearer to Sampoerna, where Tourism has been growing at a fast pace in recent years. Some lose their homes due to fire. They are constantly reminded of this threat of losing their homes as they see other unfortunate families being displaced, and become homeless, living on the streets, pavements and roadsides of Sampoerna.

Sampoerna, Tawau is now a bustling Seaside Township, with many, and growing number of Chinese (China) Tourists. With its popularity among the Chinese Tourists, prices of food and costs have gone up. Sea activities like island hopping, snorkelling, diving help in the economic growth of the locals.

Yet among the hustle and bustle of activities, the displaced and homeless, mostly Bajau Laut people, living in the streets, back allies, and in the further and more remote islands, are ignored; they are the more "unsightly part" , best not to be portrayed in a Township where Tourism is growing. Many companies are seizing opportunities to build hotels and restaurants in Sampoerna, especially near the beach fronts, and near the Stilt homes of these poor people; areas which are now prime for Tourism Development.

Thanks to the support of our kind sponsors, KYCO CSP has been able to reach out to some of this Segment of Poor People.

During Day 1, packed food boxes (rice with a piece of fried chicken, vegetable and gravy + packet/ bottled drinks) were handed to over 600 children.

During Day 2 & 3, over 600 bags of rice benefitted these Poor families in Sampoerna, Tawau.

The grateful and thankful smiles of the children, and families were priceless. It is most humbling, and such a blessing for Jin Hong (CSP Sr Student) and I, to be part of your effort to help bring some joy to these people🙏 I was personally affected by the image of a young boy, no more than 3 feet, with a thin face and tethered clothes, carrying a baby girl in his arms, and with pleading eyes, asking for money. Jin Hong was stopped on the roadside by a little girl, who asked him if she can have the Ice Cream Cone he was eating.

Thank you once again to all our kind sponsors for their contributions; you cared enough to help out these children and families, for whom a small piece of fried chicken is such a rare treat. Thank you, thank you 🙏❤️

Our thanks and appreciation also go out to Encik Amin who helped coordinate the ground work and for his liaison efforts; the ladies who helped cook the food; and the other enthusiastic helpers 🙏❤️

The Water was Choppy (rough) and it made the Boat Ride a bit more "exciting" 😂; much more than a ride at "Splashmania" 🤭

The priceless, grateful and happy smiles of the children ...
