Date : Sun 24 Sept 2023, 8am – 1pm
***********
On Sun 24 Sept 2023, KYCO-CSP team consisting of CSP Education Assistance Students Committee, Young & Old CSP Students, Teacher mentors, Shelter Home Team and Friends of CSP under the lead of KC Chu, visited the Old Folks Home in Ulu Langat, which houses 60 aged residents with various disabilities including helpers of the Home
We were joined by a Medical Volunteer Team comprising a Physician (who did general health screening), Eye Specialist (who assessed the health of the eyes), and Optometrist & Opticians (who assisted with prescription glasses for the old folks including our CSP Students)
Participants:
Older CSP Students (QN, VA, AA, EX, TX), Younger CSP Students (JH, QY, XE, AS, KF, YE), All Teacher Mentors, Shelter Home Team, MK & son JX
Our grateful thanks to all Donors who provided food, mooncakes and cash contributions, volunteers who have bought and prepared cooked food, students who made red eggs and jelly, and teachers & Shelter Home Team who ferried the children and all who made it to give your care & cheers to the old folks.
Residents have enjoyed the donated mooncakes while waiting for their medical check-up/ eyes screening.
Further management for those who did health & vision screening and needed assistance:
1) Supervisor of the Home has the information on the residents. They will seek medical attention at the local hospital for eye management, hearing issues etc
2) We have to arrange to supply natural tears
3) Several pair of glasses that improve vision significantly for psuedoaphakia and presbyopia were given
Our students took the opportunity for screening and received free pairs of glasses too
Lunch with rice & stewed pork, egg with long beans, & watermelon followed
As a highlight too, red eggs were distributed to each old folk and Helpers in celebration of Sifu’s Birthday
Ang pows were also given to each resident by the students at the end of the visit.
A big thank you to all of you. You have brought much warmth, love, a feeling of being cared for and given much joy to the lonely old folks even for just half a day.
All CSP Students have gained invaluable experience from learning about old age and their challenges arising from vision & health problem and their fears to see doctors & do surgery. The children have wonderful opportunities to learn to care beyond the usual serving of food, to talking and interacting directly with the old folks. They have also learned to take vision, assist the medical and optical team. These learning experiences would prove very useful for their future CVs.
Older students are also planning to make a video of the visit which will be uploaded in the newly revamped CSP website soon (https://csp.kyco.org/). Some photos are as below with more to be uploaded later
It is similarly a highly meaningful exposure and activity for all CSP members to learn to lead, organize the activity, learning to care with love & joy and handle well the situational constraints, as they come.
Thank you all.
